Taste
Jumped
the gun,
sprung ahead,
broke the rules.
They say,
“Don’t wish it away.”
and I try
but, how to not
when I’ve seen the mountaintop.
The other side,
the promised land
in my hand
and then not.
Placed on the shelf
just out of reach,
and back to
face-brick buildings
where they preach
of the future.
The future which
I’ve tasted,
tasted as Lionel Newton
told us to
taste
Shakespeare’s word.
Well, I’ve
tasted the Prince’s Paris,
I know his yearning
to return.
But, back to school:
rise, walk, work, fall.
And you are my Claudius.
Six months multiplies,
grows and doubles,
stretches, bubbles
to the long straight road through Grahamstown.
But I am on the hill.
No, I am on the hill
through digital stills.
In reality I sit,
Denmark-bound,
all I want is to
get out.
But faced I am:
Claudius and Gertrude’s
irrational rationality,
Ophelia’s need (too great),
Laertes’ thirst for blood,
and my own question.
Taste the word,
taste the wor

How to Pocket a Man's Humanity
First, convince him to adopt
a rescue cat, fat, days away
from slaughter. Find one mis-
sing half his tail. The pair
will purr in tune; this step
is important. Next, rush him,
him and his rescue, to their
home, and then keep them dry
and healthy. Move deliberate-
ly, with articulation. Shape
the sound. Watch cat and man
sup together, sleep together.
Spring happens upon them, as
it does, and the man and his
rescue walk along the bridge-
less route to the forest and
grove without wind. Convince
him to let rescue race aloft,
to the distant hill-top. And
he will, and he does, and he
is gone. The man screams out-
ward into the meadow, scream
after scream weaving through
stalks of wheat, but nothing.
No clicks or mews. A nothing
against the rust of night on
the horizon. Help the man to-
ward his doorstep. Help keep
him apprised of the treeline
and its shadows. Finally, he,
rescue, appears, and the man
grabs your collar and shouts
and walks and runs and stops.
Rescue has brought home life

Exhale
I love the marks that a woman’s clothes leave on her body. I love the red indents and the proof of a long day before she even opens her mouth.
Tight socks circumventing ankle bones. A watch cutting a bit too tightly around a pulse. The alluringly simple bra straps; wire pressing up into the impossibly soft undersides of breasts; the cryptic clasp nestled between shoulder blades. The imprint of lace and elastic on the taut tender tendon of the inner thigh. The geography of jeans around the hips and trailing along the legs like railroad tracks. The line on her cheek from when she fell asleep on the bus home.
I love the luxurious sigh when it all puddles to the floor, shedding this artificial skin. Remnants of weariness leave whispers on the body.
And after all she has been through, she still comes to me and allows me to trace these whispers with my fingertips, eyes, lips. She doesn't cover herself and doesn't hide and lets me in.
We leave the lights on.

South Africa
Hey there! My name is Emily, I'm a South African Christian Feminist SuperWhoLock fangirl that takes many naps and drinks lots of rooibos.

Currently in matric with art, science and history as my chosen subjects.
My first love is painting, especially when I have some sort of television show on in the background.

I'd love to work in the film industry, especially as a cinematographer, or another part of the camera department.
